On July 13, 2025, in the bustling city of Lyon, Greg faced a moment every cyclist dreads: returning to a bike and realising someone had tried to steal it. What could have been another theft story instead turned into a powerful testimony of resilience—thanks to the right choice of lock.
Greg had recently invested in a brand-new ebike:
“I had recently purchased a new ebike from Ruff Cycles, $4000, a very nice bike that I had gotten for my work commute. I had spent a considerable amount of effort reading about Ulocks, since my last bike was stolen in Lyon the year before.”
After the painful loss of his previous bike, Greg researched extensively. He wanted a lock that wasn’t just a deterrent but a genuine line of defence. His search led him to the LITELOK X1, a lock that had built its reputation on resisting angle grinders.
“After reading about how the lock defeated a full diamond disc on an angle grinder/its battery, I purchased it immediately.”
It was one of Greg’s first rides out with his new ebike. He cycled to Les Puces du Canal fleamarket in Lyon, a lively destination filled with locals and tourists. Confident in his lock, he secured the bike carefully:
“I had locked my Litelok X1 around the bike's double steel top tubes and the center of the frame, and through a basic bike rack. The bike was parked next to multiple other bikes in broad daylight in a public place.”
After shopping, Greg returned to find something alarming:
“After shopping a bit and coming back, I noticed the lock had been significantly grinded down (I would guess less than 30% of the core remained). I can only guess the lock defeated their angle grinder, and they thought they could twist the remaining core. NOPE.”
Even though the would be thieves managed to damage one side of the LITELOK X1, they would have needed to complete two full cuts, demanding far more time and effort than they were willing to risk.
“While they had slightly dented one of the top tubes in what I can only imagine was their panic (I mean the thing is steel, they must've been really trying to break the lock against the bike frame), they must've given up.”
Despite the attempted theft, Greg wheeled away with his bike intact, only a small dent as a reminder of the thieves’ failure.
“This is the best lock I have ever had and I am super grateful to still have my bike!”
What could have been a devastating loss turned into a story of protection and relief, proving that the right lock can make all the difference.
In a city where even broad daylight isn’t protection enough, investing in a truly grinder-resistant lock saved Greg thousands and weeks of frustration.
