An attempted theft on Portobello High Street leaves Andrew’s bike untouched, and his LITELOK X3 with only superficial damage.

On the evening of 5 September, Andrew locked up his £2,500 Boardman 8.9e electric bike on Portobello High Street in Edinburgh before heading off to meet friends.

A couple of hours later, he returned, unlocked his bike and cycled home, completely unaware that someone had attempted to steal it.

It was only once he reached better lighting and went to lock the bike up again that he noticed the damage.

 An attack that stopped at the lock

The LITELOK X3 had clearly been targeted, presumably with an angle grinder. But despite the attack, Andrew’s bike was still exactly where he had left it.

I didn’t even notice anything when I unlocked it and cycled home, but when I got into the light and went to lock the bike up again, I saw what had happened. 

The X3 had clearly been attacked, presumably with an angle grinder, but from the looks of it the damage was remarkably superficial and the bike was still exactly where I’d left it. Very happy with the lock and wanted to pass on my appreciation — it certainly earned its keep!” 

Photos Andrew shared show just how far the attempted theft got. The attackers managed to cut through the outer layer of the X3, but failed to make a dent in the lock’s metal core.

Andrew’s bike was left for just a couple of hours. The attackers found it, targeted it and attempted to cut through the X3. But they didn’t get through.

The bike stayed where Andrew had left it.
