Bike or Moto version?
They're the same lock at the same price, with the same armour, the same ratings and the same box. The X1 Moto is an X1, and the X3 Moto is an X3, and every X lock comes with the neoprene X-Pouch. We list them separately so riders and cyclists can see how the locks can be used effectively on both motorcycles, bicycles and e-bikes. Frame mounts for X1, X1 MINI and X3 can be found in the Accessories section.
X1 vs X3: your questions
Is the X3 worth the extra £110?
If your bike spends nights outside, lives in a high-theft city or is worth several thousand pounds, yes. The X3 is at least 20 times more grinder resistant than the best-selling, unarmoured D-locks, against 5 times for the X1. It also adds an ABLOY® SENTRY cylinder and a 7-year warranty for 400g more weight. If you carry your lock all day for short stops, the X1 is the better choice.
Which fits a motorcycle wheel?
Both. The X1 and X3 have almost the same inside space (about 100 × 196mm), and both go through a motorcycle wheel and brake disc. Neither wraps most rear tyres. To reach a ground anchor as well, the X1 PLUS gives 255mm of length. Check your model in the fitment gallery.
Is the X1 Moto different from the X1?
No. It's the same lock with the same armour, ratings, warranty, price and X-Pouch in the box. The same is true of the X3 Moto, X1 MINI Moto and X1 PLUS Moto. We list them separately so riders and cyclists can see how the locks can be used effectively on both motorcycles, bicycles and e-bikes.
Which is insurance approved?
Every X lock holds Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond and Powered Cycle Diamond, the highest grades Sold Secure awards, plus ART4. Insurers usually name a minimum Sold Secure grade, and Diamond is the top one. See how our locks are tested, and check the exact wording of your own policy.
How long does each take to cut?
Any lock can be cut with enough time. In BikeRadar's lab test the X1 took 4 minutes 38 seconds including disc changes to cut one side, and the X3 took more than 12 minutes and four cutting discs per side. Times vary with the grinder, the discs and the person using it.
What is the warranty?
The warranty is 7 years on the X3, and 3 years on the X1, X1 MINI and X1 PLUS, including Moto versions. It covers mechanical and operational faults, not cosmetic wear. Register your lock and keys so we can replace a lost key.
Can I key-match them?
The X1, X1 MINI and X1 PLUS are all available as Key Match versions and in keyed-alike bundles, so one key opens every lock. The X3 can't be keyed alike, either to another X3 or to an X1, because each one has its own ABLOY® SENTRY cylinder.
Should I buy one X3 or two X1s?
Each X lock has to be cut twice to remove it, because the anti-rotation design stops a single cut from freeing it. So two locks mean four cuts instead of two, which slows a thief down far more than one. Many riders pair them: the X3 through the front wheel, an X1 through the rear or to an anchor. If you only carry one lock, choose it for where the bike spends the night.
Riders who weighed up the X1 and X3

“The X1 prevented my husband's bike from being stolen as it gave us enough time to hear the angle grinder from our flat and scare the thieves off. So, we decided to replace it and purchase the X3 to offer further security!”

“I have the X1 and the X3. The X1 is slightly lighter and, I think, a bit longer than the X3 so can more easily be used when locking fat tyre bikes through the frame and wheel to the rack, the X3 I use for the front wheel directly to the bike rack.”

“I purchased the X3 a few weeks back and was so impressed with the structure I bought the X1 too… I bought the X1 for my wife's lighter bike. Worry free cycling.”
Riders who weighed up the X1 and X3

“I already had an X1 for my smaller bike and decided to go for the X3 when I got my bigger bike. As it would spend more time away from home the extra security helps to keep my mind at ease leaving it locked up overnight.”

“Got both the X1 and X3. Love the X1, it's much lighter for day to day while I use the X3 for the garage.”

“After receiving the X3 I soon realised that this and an X1 would be all I needed. Have used both to securely lock the bike each evening. One goes through the front wheel hub and the other through the rear. I can sleep soundly knowing the bike is as secure as it can be.”
