Damian recently got in touch to share his experience following an attempted theft of his £30,000 BMW R1300 GSA in Bradford on the night of 4th June.
“Saved my bacon (a £30,000 BMW R1300 GSA)... in Bradford last night”
Before leaving the bike, Damian had taken a layered approach to security, a strategy we always recommend. Multiple security measures can significantly slow down thieves, increase the effort required to steal a bike, and in many cases encourage them to move on to an easier target.
As Damian explained:
"Bike was left in the car park of a fairly posh golf club, covered with rain cover and two X3's, one on the front and one on the back wheel. I also had a roadlok and a the steering lock applied."
Despite these precautions, the thieves were clearly determined. The bike cover and multiple security devices were not enough to stop them from attempting an attack.
"The cover was removed (which is how I knew it had been attempted) and I saw the steering lock had been smashed."
Evidence from the scene showed that the attackers focused on the front LITELOK X3 after breaking the steering lock. From the images Damian shared, it is clear they attempted to use an angle grinder on both the lock body and the shackle.
Fortunately, those attempts were unsuccessful.
"The front X3 was the only one beyond the steering lock attempted."
While the steering lock sustained damage, the LITELOK X3 resisted the attack, preventing the thieves from gaining access to the bike and helping ensure that Damian's BMW remained exactly where he left it.
The outcome highlights why the LITELOK X3 is designed to withstand the types of attacks commonly used by organised bike thieves. Built around Barronium®, a patented composite armour, the X3 is engineered to resist angle grinder attacks by redirecting the grinder's energy and force back onto itself. This advanced material is permanently fused to a hardened high-tensile steel core, helping protect against a wide range of theft tools, including bolt croppers, cable cutters, hammers, chisels and freeze spray.
In Damian's case, thieves attempted to angle grind both the lock body and shackle but were unable to defeat the lock. The X3 also features a unique anti-rotation design that helps resist twisting attacks and single-cut techniques, along with an ABLOY® SENTRY lock cylinder, widely regarded as one of the most pick-resistant locking mechanisms available.
Stories like Damian's highlight the importance of using multiple layers of security and investing in protection that can withstand determined attacks when it matters most.
