A lock is only truly put to the test when a thief decides to attack it. For Ed, that moment came on 9 September in Nunhead, London, when an attempted theft of a £1,500 e-bike was stopped by the LITELOK X1.
Ed reached out to share what happened after discovering that the bike had been targeted with an angle grinder.
“I have an X1 lock which fortunately saved my e-bike last night! It has been attacked with an angle grinder but thanks to your technology they’ve only got halfway through the reinforced metal.”
Ed’s e-bike had been secured to a proper bike stand outside Nunhead station. With the bike’s battery having run out of charge, Ed left it there overnight.

Train stations can be particularly high-risk locations for bike theft. Thieves can take advantage of the fact that bikes may be left unattended for extended periods, giving them more time to attempt to defeat a lock.
Ed was aware of the risk, but trusted the LITELOK X1 to protect the bike:
"The bike ran out of charge so I left it outside Nunhead station overnight. It is a high risk area, but I was confident the Litelok would do its job if anyone attempted theft, and fortunately I was right!”
The attempted theft involved an angle grinder being used directly against the X1’s reinforced shackle. The attacker managed to make a partial cut on one side, but the lock was not defeated.
To remove the bike, the would be bike thief would have needed to completely cut through the first side of the shackle and then make a second cut. The anti-rotation design means that even if an attacker manages to cut through one side of the lock, the shackle cannot simply be rotated or twisted out of the way. A second cut is required to fully remove the lock from the bike and bike stand, giving the thief another major obstacle to overcome.

Rather than allowing the grinder to cut through the lock quickly, Barronium® wears down the cutting disc and drains the grinder’s battery power. The result is a cutting process that becomes slower and more difficult for the bike thief.

For Ed’s e-bike, that technology made the difference between an attempted theft and a successful one.
The attempted theft is a powerful real-world example of why choosing the right lock matters, particularly when securing a high-value e-bike in a location where it may be left unattended for hours.
No one wants to discover that their bike has been attacked. But when a thief arrives with an angle grinder, the difference between a lock that simply looks tough and one that has been engineered to resist power-tool attacks can be significant.
