LITELOK X1 Saves Bike in Florence #136

Bike theft remains a major issue in many cities across Europe, and Florence is no exception. Recently, Raluca got in touch with us to share how their Litelok helped protect their bike from an attempted theft while parked overnight in the Italian city.

“My Litelok has just saved my bike from being stolen in Florence, Italy, a city with rampant bike theft.”

At the time of the incident, Raluca's bike was around one year old.

“When I bought the bike, its value, with accessories, was around 300 EUR. It is approximately 1 year old.”

Like many cyclists, Raluca took care to choose a sensible parking location. The bike was left overnight on a mixed-use street in northeast Florence, in a well-lit area with visible surveillance signage and regular night time traffic.

“The bike was parked overnight on a mixed-use (commercial and residential) one-way street in northeast Florence (Italy). I left it in a well-lit spot near a sign that says there is video surveillance around. It was parked against and locked onto the wrought iron fence of a residential complex - on the outside of the fenced perimeter. The street has some traffic even during the night, so the bike wasn't in a totally secluded spot.

The next day, I found signs of attempted theft on the lock but no other damage to the fence or the bike.”

Despite the precautions, thieves still targeted the bike. The LITELOK X1 held firm. While there were visible signs that an attempt had been made to the lock, the bike remained exactly where it had been left.

"Bicycle theft is extremely common in Florence; according to one source, approximately 20 thousand bikes were stolen in 2024, amounting to about 60 bikes per day (Source: La Nazione). It felt good to thwart these guys!"

The attempted attack also highlights the importance of using a lock that is specifically designed to resist modern theft techniques. The LITELOK X1 features a unique anti-rotation mechanism that prevents the lock from being defeated through twisting attacks or a single successful cut. To remove the lock, thieves would need to complete two full cuts, significantly increasing the time, effort and risk involved.

As the damage in the image shows, the thieves only managed to make a shallow cut on one side of the lock with an angle grinder before abandoning the attempt. The lock remained intact and the bike stayed secure.

With angle grinders now one of the most commonly used tools in organised bike theft, choosing a lock that offers proven angle grinder resistance is essential. A lock that has achieved Sold Secure Diamond certification and has been independently tested against angle grinder attacks provides cyclists with the highest level of protection available, creating a powerful deterrent and dramatically reducing the likelihood of a successful theft.
