UK Bike theft remains a growing problem across the UK, affecting both cyclists and motorcyclists. From commuter bicycles and high-value e-bikes to scooters and motorcycles, thieves are becoming increasingly organised, targeting vehicles in city centres, residential streets and transport hubs.
Using insights from the LITELOK Theft Intelligence Dashboard, we've analysed theft patterns to identify the five UK cities where bike theft is most prevalent. We have combined attempted theft data reported by LITELOK customers, government crime statistics, and insights from community engagement to better understand patterns in bike theft activity and targeted locations.
Alongside the data, we've included real customer success stories from the hot spot locations.
Whether you ride a bicycle or a motorcycle, understanding UK bike theft trends can help you make more informed decisions about where and how you park.
Based on our findings, these are the UK’s top 5 bike theft hotspots:
1. London
2. Birmingham
3. Manchester
4. Leeds
5. Bristol
Some of these cities may already be on your radar as bike theft hotspots. Let's take a closer look at each one, exploring what makes them high-risk locations and highlighting real success stories from riders who had their bikes saved by LITELOK. Most parking locations relate to all cities.
London
London taking the top spot is unlikely to come as a surprise. As the UK's largest city, its high population density, busy transport hubs and sheer volume of bicycles and motorcycles contribute to it recording the highest levels of theft in our Theft Intelligence Dashboard.

Railway and Underground stations are common targets for opportunistic thieves. They know that many cyclists and motorcyclists leaving their bikes at these locations are travelling onwards, meaning their bikes are likely to be unattended for an extended period. While it's easy to assume that busy public spaces would deter theft, that's often no longer the case. Thieves are aware that bystanders are unlikely to intervene, allowing them to act with confidence. To reduce the risk of being identified, many conceal their faces or wear clothing that makes them harder to recognise on CCTV or by witnesses.

Many London residents store their bicycles and motorcycles in apartment parking facilities or communal underground garages. Despite being marketed as secure, these shared spaces are regularly targeted by thieves, making them a significant contributor to bike theft across the capital.
We have helped save bikes across London, from residential areas and private driveways to train stations. Here is just one example of a London LITELOK success story.
Birmingham
Birmingham continues to experience high levels of bike theft across both bicycles and motorcycles, particularly in busy commercial areas and residential neighbourhoods.

Like many major UK cities, Birmingham's city centre and retail parks remain popular target areas for bike thieves. Bikes left unattended while people work, shop or socialise can provide easy opportunities for theft.
University campuses across Birmingham also present attractive opportunities for bike thieves. With thousands of students and staff relying on bicycles for daily travel, campuses often have a high concentration of bikes parked in one location for several hours at a time. Although many universities provide dedicated cycle parking, the volume of bikes and the predictable routines of commuters can make these areas a target for opportunistic thieves.

Manchester
Manchester's cycling community has continued to grow, and with it, the popularity of premium bikes and e-bikes. However, this growth has also caught the attention of thieves. High-value bikes represent a significant financial opportunity, with criminals often targeting models that can be resold quickly and easily. For riders investing thousands into their bikes, theft can be both a financial and personal loss.
As highlighted earlier, criminals are increasingly finding ways to bypass traditional security measures in private parking facilities. In one Manchester case, thieves gained access to a secure bike storage area by cutting through the metal bars of the entrance, demonstrating that even restricted-access areas can become targets.

However, having additional security measures in place can make a significant difference. In this instance, the thief was unable to successfully steal the protected e-bike, despite attempting to break through the storage area. The customer, Mitch, shared his experience:
“Your guys lock saved my bike! Someone broke into our building, cut a hole into our bike locker and attempted to steal mine (the only e-bike in the locker). Completely unsuccessful just a few marks on it. So, they took someone else’s bike instead with an inferior lock.”

Leeds
Leeds has seen a growing cycling community in recent years, with more residents choosing bikes as a convenient way to travel around the city. However, as cycling becomes more popular, the number of bikes being left in public spaces has also increased. From city centre cycle parking to commuter routes, thieves are often looking for opportunities where bikes are left unattended during daily routines.
While much of the focus around bike theft centres on bicycles and e-bikes, motorcyclists in Leeds also face theft risks. The city is a popular base for riders due to its strong transport links, large commuter population and close proximity to some of Yorkshire's most popular riding routes, including the surrounding countryside and scenic roads of West Yorkshire.

However, the same factors that make Leeds attractive to riders also create opportunities for thieves. Motorcycles are often left outside homes, workplaces or public locations for extended periods, with criminals targeting valuable bikes, parts and accessories. As motorcycle ownership continues to grow, protecting these vehicles with effective security measures is becoming increasingly important.
Bristol
Last, but certainly not least, is Bristol. As one of the UK's most cycling-friendly cities, it's no surprise that bikes are a common sight across the city. However, the popularity of cycling also means there are more opportunities for thieves, making bike security an important consideration for riders.

Bristol is not only home to a thriving cycling community, but also a growing number of motorcyclists who rely on two wheels for commuting, convenience and leisure. With busy roads and increasing congestion, motorcycles and scooters can offer riders a practical way to navigate the city, particularly for those looking to make shorter journeys more efficiently.

What These UK Bike Theft Trends Mean for Riders
Although these five cities rank as the UK's top bike theft hotspots, it's important to remember that theft can happen anywhere. These findings reflect the locations with the highest number of reported incidents, and factors such as population size, rider numbers and the volume of bikes in use all contribute to these results.
Whether you ride a bicycle, e-bike, scooter or motorcycle, taking proactive steps to protect your vehicle is essential. By choosing effective security solutions like LITELOK, we can help reduce theft, protect more riders and work together to save more bikes across the UK.
