In June 2026, Jan experienced a theft attempt in Sheffield involving their Mondraker Prime X bike secured with a LITELOK X1 lock.
The bike was left outside an indoor climbing venue while Jan took their daughter inside. During that time, a staff member noticed suspicious activity: two individuals arriving on an electric motorbike, both wearing balaclavas, and attempting to steal the bike. From looking at the images we can see they likely used angle grinder. The incident unfolded in a busy public car park during the afternoon.
The presence of the lock and the visibility of the location appear to have played a role in disrupting the attempt, with the thieves abandoning it quickly.
Jan later reflected on the incident:
“Attempted theft in a busy car park by two balaclava lads.”
Then expanded on what happened that day and how they now approach bike security:
“This incident happened when I took my daughter to Indoor Climbing and parked the bike outside the place. One of the staff members saw 2 guys on a electric motorbike turning up in balaclava s and attempt the theft. This was in the afternoon in busy location, so they gave up pretty quickly I think.
I would never leave my bike for any longer than 1hr un-attended, and do feel safe knowing I can trust my Litelok. Bike is valued maybe at £4000 with all the upgrades.”
From the evidence, the attack only progressed through the outer coating of the LITELOK X1 before being abandoned. The strength of the lock likely became apparent early in the attempt, making it clear that it would be a prolonged and difficult process to break through.
Fully defeating it would have required multiple successful cuts, significantly increasing the time needed, the number of cutting discs, and battery power consumption. Faced with that escalating effort and risk, the attempt was ultimately abandoned.
